Lessons Learnt from Installing Hyper-V

Tags: Hyper-V

I have been creating some VMs for ready to install SharePoint 2007.  So I needed something to run these VMs on so what better than to use Hyper-V.

I have found that Hyper-V will only install on a clean machine - I tried to install it on a server which I had previously installed Exchange and it failed !

So install it on a clean machine.

Having installed Hyper-V on a clean machine (KB924919 for RC0 and KB950049 for RC1) create your VM and install the operating system on it. Having installed the operating system click on VMName -> Settings -> Add Hardware on the host operting system and add a legacy network connector.  When you add this legacy network connector and load the VM operating system you will need to install KB924919 or KB950049 via Integration Services.  Integration services DVD should be mounted on the DVD (D:) for you so you need to double click on the setup.exe (make sure you use the correct one (x86 or amd64) and reboot the operating system,  If you do not you will get the dreaded yellow triangle on the network card of the guest operating system.

The next job is to add a network adapter via VMName -> Settings -> add hardware on the host operating system and then you can remove the legacy network adapter.

There you are all done.  Ready to install SharePoint 2007.
